01 — WHY WE USE COOKIESThree uses, one optional.
We use cookies for three things: to keep you logged in and secure, to remember your preferences, and — only if you accept — to measure site usage with Google Analytics. No advertising trackers. No cross-site identifiers.
02 — STRICTLY NECESSARYWithout these, the service breaks.
- bm_session — keeps you logged in. Expires when you close the browser.
- bm_csrf — prevents cross-site request forgery. Expires with the session.
You can't disable these without breaking the app, but they're scoped strictly to Bettermaps and never shared.
03 — FUNCTIONALPreferences and quality of life.
- bm_theme — remembers if you prefer dark mode in the app. Expires after 12 months.
- bm_locale — remembers your interface language. Expires after 12 months.
- bm_recent — remembers your last opened map so we can put it on top. Expires after 30 days.
04 — ANALYTICSOnly with your consent.
We use Google Analytics (GA4) to understand how the site is used — but only after you accept it in the cookie banner. Decline and it never loads. We turn on IP anonymization.
Once accepted, Google Analytics sets _ga and _gid cookies; bm_consent remembers your choice so we don't ask again.
05 — MARKETINGNone.
We don't run ads and we don't share data with advertising networks. There are no marketing cookies on Bettermaps.
06 — HOW TO DISABLE COOKIESBrowser-level control.
You can disable or delete cookies in your browser settings. Most browsers also offer a private/incognito mode that prevents cookies from persisting between sessions. Doing so will log you out and reset your interface preferences.
07 — QUESTIONSWhere to write.
